Martha Snell Nicholson (1898-1953)  Plagued by illness and pain, Martha spent most of her adult life as an invalid.  Refusing to let her physical limitations handicap her spirit, however, he devoted her life to serving the Lord through her writing.  Martha had a unique gift for touching the hearts of people through her poetry.  Her writings are still widely read by Christians today.

When I stand at the judgment seat of Christ
And He shows me His plan for me,
The plan of my life as it might have been
Had he had His way, and I see
How I blocked Him here, and I checked Him there,
And I would not yield my will–
Will there be grief in my Saviour‘s eyes,
Grief, though He loves me still?

He would have me rich, and I stand there poot’
Stripped of all but His grace,
While memory runs like a hunted thing
Down the paths I cannot retrace.

Then my desolate heart will well-nigh break
With the tears that I cannot shed;
I shall cover my face with my empty hands,
I shall bow my uncrowned head . . .

Lord, of the years that are left to me,
I give them to Thy hand;
Take me and break me, mould me to
The pattern Thou hast planned!

A middle aged woman has a heart attack and is taken to the hospital.  While on the operating table she has a near death experience.  During that experience she see God and asks if this is it.  God says no and explains that she has another 30 years to live.

Upon her recovery she decides to just stay in the hospital and have a face lift, liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, etc.   She even has someone come in and change her hair color.  she figures since she’s got another 30 years she might as well make the most of it.

she walks out of the hospital after the last operation and is killed by an ambulance speeding by.  She arrives in front of God and complains, “I thought you said I had another 30 years.”

God replies, “I didn’t recognize you.”

PRAYER

One author said:  “Our fellowship with God is not meant to wait wntil we are in heaven.  god’s greatest desire, and our greatest need, is to be in constant fellowship with Him now, and there is no greater expression of experience of fellowship than prayer.”

Colossians 4:2  Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.

Vital Prayer Life

To have a vital prayer life we must have the right attitude.  We also must avoid pride, don’t be a hypocrite or try to impress others or God.  Make your prayers personal.  After all you are talking to your Heavenly Father and Creator.    And we must follow Christ’s example.  (See  Matthew 6:5-15-Sermon on the Mount)

Proclaim

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name . . .”

Start by expressing you love to God.  Express Adoration, Thanksgiving and Praise.  To get an idea about this read Psalms 146-150.

“Enter His gates with Thanksgiving and His courts with praise”

Purpose

“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven . . .”

Commit yourself to God’s purpose.  Align your self with His will.

See these verses for God’s will in scripture:  I Thessalonians 4:3-6, 5:18; Ephesians 5:15-17; John 7:16-17

Provision

Give us this day our daily bread . . .”

Ask god to provide for your daily needs, but be sure your motives are right.  See the following verses:  Philippians 4:6,19; James 4:2,3 *; i John 5:14; John 16:13

Pardon

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. . .”

Ask the Holy Spiritto reveal any sin and and accepts God’s forgivness.  Confess each sin and make restitution when ever necessary.  It is best to make things right before going to the Lord in prayer.  Here are some helpful verses:  Psalm139:23-24; Proverbs 28:13; matthew 5:23-24; I John 1:9

People

Pray for other people.  See I Timothy 2:1; Ephesians 1:15-19; Colossians 1:3-12; I Thessalonians 1:2-3

Protection

Ask God for spiritual protection.

See Ephesians 6:10-12, 18 (the armor of God); I John 4:4

Then rest in his peace.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer an supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  and the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Phil. 4:6-7

The Aegean Sea from spaceImage via Wikipedia

Before you read this–I have encompassed a lot of information.  The most improtant aspect I feel that each person should take note of are the STRENGTHS, FAULTS, INSTRUCTION AND PROMISES.  Even though this was directed at the Seven Churches we can apply it to our own personal relationship and walk with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

EPHESUS:  The city of change–was colonized by the Greeks no earlier than 1200 BC and was located near the Aegean Sea, providing a major harbor and caravan gateway for trade to all of Asia Minor and beyond.  They worshipped Diana, the roman goddess of nature and fertility, identified with the Greek goddess Artemis.  At the present day, Ephesus has all the appearancce of an inland city, caused by natural changes in the coastline.  Paul founded the church at Ephesus.

Strength:hard work, patience, reject evil,

persevere–Faults:You have forgotten your first love (Christ)–Instruction:repent and do the works as you did at first–Promise:You will eat from the tree of life–(Rev 2:1-7)

SMYRNA:  The city of life–a thriving seaport city now called Izmir, about 35 miles north of Ephesus.  Founded as a Greek colonymore than 1000 years before Christ.  It paralleled Ephesus in wealth, beauty and commerc.  Boasted to be the city of the poet Homer.  It was filled with pagen temples of Apollo, Asclepia, Aphrodite, Cybele, Emperor Tiberius, and Zeus.  It was free city but gave full allegiance to the Roman Empire.  Although the origin of the city is not mentioned in the Bible, the church was probably founded by believers from Ephesus.

Strength:endure your suffering and poverty, yet you are rich–Fault:none–Instruction:remain faithful even when facing prison, persecution, or death–Promise:I will give you the crown of life.  You will not be hurt by the second death.  (Rev 2:8-11)

PERGAMUM:  The city of authority–founded no later than 399 BC, became the capital city of the Roman province in Asia giving the traveler the impression of a royal city, the home of authority.  Located about 60 miles north of Smyrna and  15 miles from the Aegean Sea.  It was a center of learning, medicine and religious books.  The library, rivaling the Alexandrian library, drew many princes, priests and scholars.  Noted for marble carving, it excelled the other six cities in architectural beauty.  They worshiped Zeus Olympus, the savior-god, Athena, patron Goddes of Athens; the Roman Emperor, as god; Dionysus, god of vegetation; and Asclepius, god of healing.  The animal cult workship of the God-Serpent and the God-Bull were also practiced.  Some scholars believe that Gaius, addressed by John in the book of 3 John, was the first Bishop of Pergamum.

Strength:Loyalty to Christ, refused to deny Him–Faults:Tolerate cults, heresies, idolatry, and immorality–Instruction:repent–Promise:Hidden manna and a stone with a new name on it  (Rev 2:12-17)

THYATIRA:  Weakness made strong–a small town about 35 miles southeast of Pergamum, was founded by general Seleucid Nicator under Alexander the Great in about 300 BC.  Military garrisons greatly strengthened the city which was noted for commerce and guilds such as tanners, copper-smiths, potters, and purpledyers.  Object of workshop included the Emperor, the Thyatiran war hero, Tyrimnos, and trade guild gods, e.g., bronze smiths workshop the goddess was Pallas Athena.  How the church was established is unknown but “Lydis, a sell of purple, of the city of Thyatira,” came to the Lord under Paul’s ministry in Philippi (Acts 16:14-15)

Strength:deeds, love, faith, service.  Patient endurance, constant improment–Faults:tolerate cult, idolatry and immoraltiy–Instruction:judgment coming, repent, hold fast until I come–Promise:I will give you authority over the nations and gift of the morning star. (Rev 2:18-29)

SARDIS:  The city of death–was founded in about 1200 BC and became the capital of the Lydian kingdom located 30 miles southeast of Thyatira.  It stood on a lofty plateau above the Hermus valley.  Sardis was twice defeated, once by King Cyrus of Persia (359 BC), and again by Antiochus IIIof Syria (218 BC).  The wealth of the Lydian kings arose from trade and the commerce with the East.  An impressive acropolis housed a temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis.  Goddesses Artemis and Cybele were commemorated on local coinage.  By the second century AD, Sardis lay in decay.  Today Sardis is a small village called Sart.  When and how the church there was started are unknown.

Strength:some have kept the faith–Faults:church is dead–Instruction:wake up, repent, turn to Jesus again, strengthen what little remains–Promise:faithful will walk with Jesus and not be blotted out of the book of life.  (Rev 3:1-6)

PHILADELPHIA:  The Missionary City–founded by King Attalus of Pergamum (140 BC), was located in the Hermus River Valley about 28 miles SE of Sardis.  An earthquake destroyed the city in AD 17.  It was rebuilt by Emperor Tiberius.  Famous for its grape industry, adn was also noted for textiles and leather goods.  It became a strong fortress city and was called the “gateway to the East.”  Although Dionysis was the major pagan god, people also worshiped sun and serpent gods.  The last of the Byzantine cities, was finally captured by the Turks in 1390.  Christians lived there until the beginning of the 20th century.  When and how the church was established there is not know, but it prospered for many centuries.

Strength:kept my work, have not denied my name–Fault:None–Instruction:I have placed before you an open door, I will keep you from the hour of trial–Promise:I will make you a pillar in the temple of my God. (Rev 3:7-13)

LAODICEA:  The City of Compromise–was located on a fertile plain overlooking the Lycus River about 50 miles SE of Philadelphia.  Became the capital of ancient Phrygia, was established by Antiochus II(261-246 BC) and named in honor of his sister-wife Laodice before their divorce in 253 BC.  Being on a major trade route running from Ephesus to Syria, banking and the manufacture of expensive cloth made from soft black wool, enabled Laodicea to accumulate great wealth.  Its medical school became famous for the development of an ear slave made of spice and Phrygian power.  Zeus Azeus and Men Karou were the main Phrygian god.  Cicero lived in Laodicea in 50 BC.  Laodicea was so wealthy that when a massive earthquake destroyed the city in 60 AD, it refused aid from Rome and rebuilt at its own expense.  Most scholars believe that Epaphras started the church there (Colossians 1:7, 4;12-13).  Paul was aware of their spiritual struggles (Colossians 2:1)

Strength:none–Faults:neither hot nor cold, you rely on riches but don’t realize your wretched condition–Instruction:turn from indifference and repent–Promise:I will invite those who overcome to sit with me on my throne.

MISSION: Restoring America‘s Biblical Foundation from Genesis to Revelation.

http://www.americanvision.org/

I really want to promote and share this wonderful website.  I have been receiving their email, and enjoying articles and lectures from this site.  I have learned so much about history from a biblical perspective and also current events.  There is so much knowledge and biblical truth shared on this site.

Gary DeMar is the President, he is a prolific author and lecturer on biblical worldview issues.  He earned his M.Div. at Reformed Theological Seminary in 1979, and his Ph.D. in Christian Intellectual History from Whitefield Theological Seminary in 2007.

Quoted from the web site: “Gary DeMar, our president, has written several best selling books on the Christian history of our nation.  From America’s Christian Heritage to American’s Christian History, (which I have read and is absolutely fasinating) Gary produces pages of evidence that our founding fathers believed that our rights and laws came from the God of the Bible.    After America won her independence, she gradually became the most prosperous and powerful nation in world history.  As the psalmist writes, ‘Blessed is that nation whose God is the Lord.’ (Ps 33:12)  There’s no question that America’s success was the result of her obedience to God.

STRATEGY: Just as the Apostle Paul used the Roman highways to spread the Gospel, American Vision will use the internet, Radio, Television, audio/video Resources, Publications, and Training Seminars to equip Christians with a Biblical worldview and teach them to fulfill all of the Great Commission and the Cultural mandate.

With all that–I really encourage you to check it out !!  Explore all the wisdom, knowledge and resources that this site has to offer.  I promise you–you will not be sorry.

King Wenceslas

Image by Great Beyond via Flickr

How many of you are familiar with the Christmas carol “Good King Wenceslaus?”  Did you know that this carol was written about a Christian martyr?

This “King Wenceslaus” in the song was really a duke named Vaclav.  He ruled Bohemia, the Czeck Republic, with Christian justice until his brother Bioleslav, a pagan, assassinated him.  The Dukewas a devout Christian whose short life was riddled with political intrigue, murder and pagan influences.Vaclav’s grandparents who were Christians, ruled Bohemia during the time when the Slavic nations were being introduced to the gospel.  His grandfather built the first Christian church in the Czech Republic which is north of Prague.  Duke Vratislav I, Vaclav’s father, followed in his parents’ footsetps by becoming a passionate Christian and teaching his son Christian values.

After Vaclav’s father died his life was full of turmoil.  His mother, Drahomira now ruled the country.  She was a former pagen and ruled Bohemia with greed and cruelty.  Vaclav found his santuary with his grandmother Ludmila.  She was a gentle and popular Christian and was passionate about helping her grandsone become a good Christian leader.

Ludmila encouraged Vaclav to overthrow his mother’s reigh.  His mother found out and had Ludmila strangled.  Still in his teens, Vaclav wrested the throne from his mother and turned Bohemia back to its Christian ways.

During his reign, we was generous towards orphans, widown and poor.  He would even carrd wood to the need, visited prisons and welcomed German missionaries and built churches.

His brother ended his reign by convincing a group of anti-Christian nobles to him Vaclav.  Boleslav invited his brother to a feast.  On the way to the dinner the duke was stabbed on the church doorsteps.  While dying, Vaclav’s last words were, “Brother, may God forgive you!”  The Bohemians were greatly dismayed and imediately honored Vaclav as a martyr.

It was in 1853 when John Neal wrote the carol “Good King Wenceslaus” after hearing the story of Duke Vaclav from some British soldiers returning from Eastern Europe.  The song was written for Children extolling the virtues of generosity.  “Therefore, Christian men, be sure; wealth or rank possessing; Ye who now will bless  the poor; shall yourselves find blessing.”

The hidden stones of our Christian foundation are found in those who choose to suffer death rather than to deny Christ.  They sacrifice something very important to futher the Kingdom of God.  These precious ones are the Christian Martyrs.

A rule I have had for years is: to treat the Lord Jesus Christ as a personal friend.  His is not a creed, a mere doctrine, but it si He himself we have.

A man ought to live so that everybody knows he is a Christian. . . and most of all, his family ought to know.

Character is what you are in the dark.

Faith makes all thing possible…love makes all things easy.

Give me a man who says this one thing I do, and not those fifty things I dabble in.

God never made a promise that was too good to be true.

I have more trouble with myself that with any other man.

I know the Bible is inspired because it inspires me.

If I take care of my character, my reputation will take care of me.

The Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible.

There’s no better book with which to defent the Bible than the Bible itself.

We can stand affliction better than we can prosperity, for in prosperity we forget God.

Preparation for old age should begin not later tahn one’s teens.  A life which is empty of purposes until 65 will not suddenly become filled on retirement.

We are told to let our light shine, and if it does we won’t need to tell anybody it does.  Lighthouses don’t fire cannons to call attention to theri shining–they just shine.

We talk of heaven being so far away.  It is within speaking distance to those who belong there.  Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people.

Where I was born and where and how I have lived is unimportant.  It is what I have done with where I have been that should be of interest.

We don’t change the message–the message changes us.

Prayer: Don’t give God instructions–just report for duty!

If God is your co pilot–switch seats.

God loves Everyone, but probably prefers “fruits of the spirit” over “religious nuts!”

The Will of God will never take you to where the Grace of God will not protect you.

God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.

A priest, an evangelist, and a minster were in a row boat in the middle of a pond fishing.  Non of them had caught anything all morning.

Then the evangelist stands up and says he needs to go to the bathroom so he climbs out of the boat and walks on the water to shore.   he comes back ten minutes later the same way.

Then the minister decides he needs to go to the bathroom, too, so he climbs out of the boat and walks on the water to shore.  He, too, comes back the same way ten minutes later.

The priest looks at both of them and decides that his faith is just as strong as his fishing buddies and that he will walk on water, too.  He stands up and excuses himself.  As he steps out he makes a big splash down into the water.

The evangelist looks at the minister and says, “I suppose we should have told him where the rocks were.”

A lot of kneeling will keep you in good standing.

Never give the devil a ride–he will always want to drive.

Exercise daily–walk with the Lord.

Adam (AD duhm)  First man.  God created Adam in His image (Gen. 1:27; 2:7).  Adam and Eve chose to mar God’s image by disobeying Him.  This sin plunged the human race into sin (Gen. 3; Rom. 5:12-21)  Jesus Christ, the second Adam, came to deliver us from sin and transform us into His perfect image (I Cor. 15:45, 49; Rom. 8:29)

TIME IN THE WORD

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”  (II Timothy 3:16 and 17)

“How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart.  they also do no unrighteousness; they walk in His ways.”

“How can a young man keep his way pure?  By keeping it according to Your word.  With all my heart I have sought You; do not let me wander from Your commandmentsYour word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You.”

“I will meditate on Your precepts and regard Your ways.  I shall delight in Your statues; I shall not forget Your word.”  Psalm 119: 2-3, 9-11, 15-16

WHAT SHOULD I DO ?

HEAR THE WORD:  Read it out loud, Listen to it out loud, Be under good teaching.  ( Colossians 3:16,         I Tim. 4:13)

READ THE WORD:  Daily and Systematically go through the Bible. (Psalm 1, Luke 24:13)

There are 845,000 words in the Bible.  An average person reads about 200 words per minute.  So, you can read through the bible in a year reading about 15 minutes a day.

STUDY THE WORD:  (important thought–study helps us avoid:)  Spiritual anorexia-no nurishment, and Spiritual bulimia-food that enters and leaves to quickly.  (Psalm 19:7-10)

**SCRIPTURE HAS ONE MEANING, ONE SENSE.**  We need to ask what God means by what He wrote.  Not what someone else’s opinion is about God’s word.  (2 Peter 1:20-21)

  • Read entire context and Note important terms.  (Psalm 19:7-10
  • Identify background and culture and List and look up cross-references. (I Corinthians 10:1-13, Exodus 32;1-6, Numbers 25, Psalm 30:5-6)

MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  • Ask 6 basic questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why, How?
  • Construct a principle-What am I to do? How? When? What will be the result?  (will I be a tree firmly planted and bearing fruit)
  • Memorize Scripture.  (Psalm 37:30-31)
  • Consider and apply  the principles you have learned.
  • Speak it.  (The more you speak it the better you’ll remember it.)

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”  Psalm 19:14

From: LORD TEACH ME TO PRAY IN 28 DAYS–BY KAY ARTHUR

and I quote:  “Therefore, the Lord’s Prayer was not meant to be a prayer said by rote.  Rather, Jesus was using the same manner of instruction that the rabbis of the day used.  He was teaching the disciples an indexfor prayer.  Index prayers were a collection of brief sentences, each of which suggested a subject for prayer.  I believe, as do others, that the Lord’s Prayer states for us in topical form the ingredients necessary for effective prayer.  Nowhere else in God‘s Word did the disciples say to Jesus, ‘Teach us to pray.’  Nowhere else did Jesus directly say, ‘Pray, then, in this way‘ (Matthew 6:9)  Therefore, to pray according to the index or the outline of the Lord’s Prayer is to pray an effective prayer that will avail much.”

(Topic: Worship) Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. (Title: Worship of the Father)

(Topic: Allegiance) Thy kingdom come. (Title: Allegiance to God’s sovereignty)

(Topic: Submission) Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. (Title: Submission to His will)

(Topic: Petition and Intercession) Give us this day our daily bread. (Title: Asking for His provision)

(Topic: Confession) And forgive our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. (Title: Confession and forgiveness of debts.)

(Topic: Deliverence) And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. (Title: Watchfulness and deliverence)

(Topic: Worship) For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever, Amen. (Title: Worship)
